Guadalupe “Lupe” Alvarez, 90 of Turlock passed away at Central Valley Specialty Hospital in Modesto.  Lupe was born in Amarillo Texas to Jose and Sabina Leal.  Lupe was born into a family of migrant farmworkers.  She worked for over 60 years and was picking cotton at the age of 7.  She  worked for many years in the food processing industries.  She retired from Patterson Frozen Foods in 1993.  She graduated from Turlock Adult High School and was extremely proud of having a high school diploma.
Lupe had compassion for those in need and was passionate about social issues, human rights and environmental justice issues.  She was a faithful supporter of the United Farm Workers, a California Rural Legal Assistance community advisory board member and a founding member of the Central California Environmental Justice Network.  She participated in the Southwest Voter Registration Project and was active with the Salvation Army Silvercrest Senior Group in Turlock.
She will be missed for her sense of humor, her loving ways, her fighting spirit, and her constant guidance and counsel to her family.
Lupe was preceded in death by her parents and seven siblings: Amador Leal, Albert Leal, George Leal, Joe Leal, Maria Esparza and Sally Leal.  She is survived by her children: Lillian Esparza of Modesto, Santa Lambaren of Turlock, Rosenda (John) Mataka of Grayson and Martin Ramirez of Turlock.  She has 15 grandchildren, 34 great-children and 7 great-great grandchildren.  She is survived by two brothers:  Jesse Leal and Jack Leal.
Visitation for Lupe will be at Allen Mortuary on Thursday April 3 from 4-6 pm. followed by a Rosary at 6pm.  Mass of Christian Burial will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Friday April 4th  at 12:00pm.  Burial will follow at Turlock Memorial Park.
A celebration of her life will continue after the burial… in Modesto, CA.
